In 2016 Multitrip.com Travel Insurance conducted their “Annual Travel Survey” which asked participants about their behaviors and habits while on holiday.
As part of this survey, each traveler was asked about renting cars while abroad. The findings revealed the percentage of us who rent while on holiday as well as our awareness of the hidden rental company excess charges. See the results below:
Although this figure represents just over 1/4 of all travelers surveyed, it is still a substantial figure when you consider that nearly 3.5 Million Irish people traveled abroad in only the first half of 2016. This means that roughly 900,000 people in 2016 may have been subjected to rip offs rates and fees on their overseas car rentals!
These results detail the lack of knowledge that many consumers have when renting a car. Although many answered that they had not or will not pay the excess, over half of the answers given show that people either end up paying, or are unaware they are paying it at all. With car rental companies adding on so many extras to an initial offering, these extortionate fees can get lost the rest and leave people feeling like the whole experience has been overpriced.
Of the people who had paid or planned on paying CHE Insurance on arrival, again there was very little knowledge among this group of the average daily rates that should be charged. With just under half having no idea, and the remaining half of answers appearing to be speculation, it leaves little doubt that car hire companies have more than enough room to exploit holiday makers with these charges! Stay tuned for our upcoming post on this years figures!
